Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault

Mission: The DC Rape Crisis Center is a non-profit organization 501(c)(3) and the designated sexual assault coalition for the District of Columbia. DCRCC is one of the first rape crisis centers in the nation and has spent the past 43 years listening to the stories of survivors of sexual assault. In our 43rd year, we are working to empower a culture of consent.

What volunteers do:

Crisis Intervention Advocates (CIA) – Hotline Volunteers:

  • Serve as certified first responders to the needs of sexual assault survivors, loved ones of survivors, and professionals. Advocates provide crisis intervention, support, advocacy, and referrals through our 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year confidential crisis support hotline. Advocates may respond to calls on their cell or home phone or by answering the line directly at the Center’s office.
  • After completing a 50 hour training, Crisis Intervention Advocates commit to responding to callers during two, four hour shifts each month; charged with responding to those directly impacted by sexual violence by providing immediate and confidential access to information, resources and support.
  • Advocates are supported by a clinical supervisor who will hold monthly sessions for Crisis Intervention Advocates to process their experience, ask questions and receive further guidance on how to support survivors. All volunteers serving as Crisis Intervention Advocates are expected to attend these sessions.

Mission:  RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help victims, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
